In the fall of 2025, students at Hope-Hill Elementary School brought their vision of community to life through a powerful schoolwide mural project titled Keepers of the Community.

For two weeks, 396 participants, including students, staff, families, and volunteers, cycled through the school’s art room to paint five large-scale canvas murals spanning 125 square feet and bursting with 14 vibrant colors. The designs were created by Mural Coordinator Leah Kellaway in collaboration with the school’s STEAM ambassadors and inspired by original concepts from Atlanta artist Muhammad Yungai.

With guidance and leadership from 38 “Student Art Directors” who helped shape the creative vision, the murals highlight student advocacy in the five elements of being a “Keeper of the Community” - peace, justice, zero hunger, and climate action. The completed murals will be installed in the school’s gymnasium, a gathering space for performances and community events, serving as a lasting testament to the power of youth voice, creativity, and collaboration.

Special thanks to community partners including The Poised P.E.A.C.H.E.S, an AKA Chapter In Formation, and to Handel’s Ice Cream for their generous support.
