Camp PEACE - June 7

  • Oakhurst Baptist Church Decatur, GA (map)

Current Needs

  • Project FULL! Join us for the next one!!!

The Project

Mandy Goodwin is leading a paper mache project! This is part 1/2.
Volunteers from Break Away will be assisting!

During camp they serve approximately 50 children between the ages of 5-14. All of the children have at one point lived at the Women’s Resource Center safe house as a result of domestic violence.

They would like Paint Love to provide their children opportunities to explore their creative side and give them opportunities to experience success. One of their main goals is to help children build resilience after the trauma they have experienced.  They would like us to provide their students a creative outlet and positive relationships.

They would like a project for their club around the themes of “resiliency, self love and self esteem.” The project must also fit within one or more of the Paint Love themes:  A) Loving/respecting yourself, B) Loving/respecting others, C) Seeking and strengthening positive relationships, and D) Investing in your community.

Check out our past summers with Camp PEACE!

The Organization

Camp PEACE  is the summer program by the Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence for kids whose lives have been affected by domestic violence. All of the children have at one point lived at the Women’s Resource Center safe house as a result of domestic violence. The Women's Resource Center's mission is to create a society in which domestic violence no longer exists. They strive to meet the immediate and long-term needs of the diverse community of battered women and their children with programs that promote safety, compassion, connection, advocacy, and prevention.

The mission of Camp PEACE is to bring children exposed to domestic violence together for a month of activities that facilitate Peace Education, Action, Compassion and Empathy. Based on principles of Peace Education and Cognitively-Based Compassion Training, Camp PEACE will help children learn alternatives to violence while promoting tolerance, impartiality, affection, self-compassion and compassion for others.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Volunteers must be 16 years or older, and have a  background check on file with Paint Love

  • They would like the volunteers to have a basic understanding of how trauma affects children and how it may affect how the children interact with the volunteers and artists.

  • Due to the confidential nature of the children Camp PEACE works with, they do not allow photos unless the parents give permission which would be for Paint Love use only and ask the volunteers not to take pictures or post things on social media.
